# Laravel Explained: PHP's Elegant Framework

## Introduction

Laravel is PHP's most popular framework, and it is famous for one thing above all: developer experience. Where raw PHP leaves every decision to you (routing, database access, authentication, templating), Laravel provides elegant, well-documented answers for all of them, so a solo developer can build a complete application remarkably fast.

## Routing: URLs as readable declarations

In Laravel, a route is a single readable line mapping a URL to what should happen:

```php
// routes/web.php
Route::get('/posts', [PostController::class, 'index']);
Route::get('/posts/{post}', [PostController::class, 'show']);
Route::post('/posts', [PostController::class, 'store']);
```

`{post}` is a parameter: visiting `/posts/42` hands the post with ID 42 to the show method. `GET` routes display things, `POST` routes accept submissions, and the whole application's URL map reads like a table of contents.

## Eloquent: the database, in PHP objects

Eloquent is Laravel's ORM (object-relational mapper): database rows become PHP objects, and relationships become method calls instead of SQL joins:

```php
// app/Models/Post.php
class Post extends Model
{
    public function author()
    {
        return $this->belongsTo(User::class);
    }
}
$post = Post::find(1);
echo $post->author->name; // No SQL written by hand
```

`Post::find(1)` fetches the row, and `$post->author` follows the relationship automatically. For the common 90% of queries, you never write SQL at all. When you need to, Laravel lets you drop down to raw queries without leaving the framework.

## Blade: templates without the mess

Blade is Laravel's templating language: HTML with small, readable additions for dynamic content:

```php
<h1>{{ $post->title }}</h1>
<p>By {{ $post->author->name }}</p>
@if ($post->comments->count() > 0)
  <ul>
    @foreach ($post->comments as $comment)
      <li>{{ $comment->text }}</li>
    @endforeach
  </ul>
@endif
```

`{{ }}` outputs escaped text (safe from HTML injection by default, the same lesson as the PHP post's `htmlspecialchars`), and `@if`/`@foreach` read almost like plain English. Templates stay templates: no PHP logic soup mixed into HTML.

## PHP, elegantly.

Readable routing, Eloquent's object-based database access, and Blade's safe templates, plus built-in authentication, queues, and testing tools. Laravel's promise is that the boring parts of web development are already solved, elegantly, so you can focus on what makes your application different.
